Digital Dropbox
Been looking for a form that can be deployed on a webpage to do easy file delivery. I assume it’s not that difficult to code an email form that allows attachments, but (a) I have no idea how to do it; and (b) that would mean file sizes are limited to whatever email attachments are limited to.
So, let’s see if this works. I’m in the process of sending a file to myself via this...

TubeMogul →
Post to many video sites at once, including YouTube, Vimeo and Zoopy.
Got shoutouts during #pubmedia chat from NPR/PBS-ers and affiliates using it. Seems like a pretty powerful tool.
Update: It works pretty well, and the free account has decent access. Downsides:
Free account has a 300 MB upload limit, which is well below what some of the video sites themselves allow
Free account has a...

Random Div Display : Web Page and Site Features →
Javascript code that uses divs to randomize content display (ie: each time the page loads it would display something different)
Can also set it to auto-rotate content at a set interval. Have tested this on a page and it’s VERY cool.

Google News Blog: Open-sourcing the Living Stories... →
Living Stories going open source. I wonder why Google is deciding to drop the experiment and if that should impact whether/how others adopt it.
I still don’t think living stories goes far enough in terms of bringing together the data points of individual articles to create the coherent overarching story (Columbia Tomorrow is my favorite existing implementation of the wiki-news/living...

Polish newspaper claims ‘Pedobear’ is 2010 Vancouver Olympic mascot - Telegraph
It appears that the newspaper lifted the picture from Google Images, unaware that it had been created as a prank by Michael Barrick, a Canadian artist and graphic designer.
Pedobear, who is on the far right of the picture, was originally devised by members of the anarchic 4chan message board as...

What Does it Take to Run a Social Media Contest?
I’ve been thinking about this for well over 2 weeks now, and still haven’t worked out what I think makes a successful social media contest. So this will probably just be a collection of random thoughts that hopefully get refined over time (over a very short period of time, as this has already come up twice in as many weeks).
Defining Objectives
According to Mashable, the #1 strategy...

Fabulous!
Taken from the wall of a Facebook group entitled “Newspaper Ledes That Have Nothing to do With their Story,” which is filled with comedy gold in general:
.At high school j-workshops I’ve taught, I put it up on an overhead projector, read the first graf aloud while covering up the second graf, then ask, “Okay … What’s this story about?” The unanimous...

New Media Resolutions for 2010
Attended this event hosted by Gibralatar Associates. It was billed as a look at best practices in social media for the coming year, but was really more about hearing what has worked for federal agencies and private organizations thus far. There was a lot of Facebook and Twitter talk, of course, but also some interesting take-aways.
The speakers were: Richard Boly - Director of Office of...

Sample Twitter Schedule
Even the most well-intentioned, eager Twitter newbies need prodding to become active users of the service. It’s just not ingrained as a part of their day yet, and won’t be until they get more comfortable with it and start to see returns from it, both of which can take a while. So here’s one way I’m going to test to get over that hurdle: Giving new users a schedule that...

Social Media Contests
At some point in the near future I will spend some time thinking about this information and what it means. For the time being, here are a collection of links talking about what makes a good social media contest:

A comparison of two similar contests and why one succeeds and one fails (easy,...

Is Twitter mainstream enough to go mainstream?
@yelvington drew my attention today to this experiment by the Grand Island Independent, which apparently is out in Nebraska. For two weeks, the paper will be tweeting continuously, and feeding the tweets to its homepage in prime left column real estate.
It looks like the feed is pulling from 3 accounts, two official accounts and one by a senior writer.
This is clearly cool and unusual and...
